Some tips for staying in Iceland:
- It is expensive. Plan for at least $50-100 per day plus lodging. Even if you are a savvy traveler it will still cost you this much just to leave your hostel. Cars start at about $100/day.
- Spend time in Reykjavik during one of the music festivals.
- Everyone speaks English.
- Everyone takes a credit card.
- Know the weather. Visit the Icelandic Weather Burough and check for temperature and wind. There are weather signs everywhere. Observe them.
- Know the roads. Have a map and if you do not have a 4x4 stay off the F roads. It's just a rule of thumb but single digit roads are built up, double digit less so and triple digit even less. All roads have a sign which describes the roads ahead. Observe them.
- You can camp pretty much everywhere there isn't a sign telling you not to.
