Music Convention

Challenging music convention (for fun and engagement).

Purpose

  • utility (functional sounds vs musical) (e.g. foley, film score, hold music, video game, doorbell/clock chimes, theme based music e.g. sci-fi, etc)
  • event based (e.g. religious, war, furniture/background, psychological effect, etc)
  • narrative based (e.g. subject matter of song, characters, cultures, etc)

Composition

  • lyrics (e.g. amount of lyrics, repetition, language, song vs spoken vs rapped, etc)
  • song structure (e.g. how the song is ordered into sections)
  • composition (e.g. tempo, timing, length, structure, timber, collage/fusion, layering, use of percussion vs melody, etc)
  • non-composition (e.g. randomness, generative, aleatoric elements, instructional/logic/math, live sampling and playback during performance, etc)
  • instrumentation (sampling vs live playing, instrument(s) choice, instrument configuration/tuning, instrument voicing, use of amplification, organic vs electronic, etc)

Participation

  • recording (e.g. fidelity, recording studio treatment, recording eqquipment as instrument, etc)
  • performance (e.g. location, method of performance, presentation, # performers, etc)
  • audience (e.g. who is the audience, level of engagement with the listener, audience size: one vs many, etc)
